Simple gingerbread house template

The simplest house is a 5-inch square with 3 1/2-inch walls: six plain pieces, none bigger than a sheet, from about 1 3/4 lb of dough. Print 4 sheets and cut around the lines.

Cut list

Side walls are two dough thicknesses shorter than the depth, so they fit between the front and back.

    Why this one is easy

    • Front and back wall, cut 2: 5″ wide and 6″ to the peak. One gable shape, cut twice.
    • Side wall, cut 2: 4 1/2″ by 3 1/2″. A plain rectangle.
    • Roof panel, cut 2: 6″ by 4″. Another plain rectangle.

Every piece fits on one sheet, so nothing needs taping. At 45°, the two roof panels meet at a right angle at the peak. Dough: about 1 3/4 lb (780 g) rolled 1/4″ thick.

    Questions

    Is this good for kids?

The pieces are plain shapes that a grown-up can cut quickly. Decorating is the part kids do; the template leaves the walls plain for it.

Can I skip the roof overhang?

Yes. Set Roof overhang to 0 and the roof panels shrink to meet the walls' edges exactly.

What should I print it on?

Plain Letter paper at "Actual size". Lay the paper pieces on the rolled dough and cut around them with a sharp knife.

Print at "Actual size" on Letter paper and measure the 1-inch bar on each sheet before you cut. Pieces are plain walls and roof panels: cut doors and windows by hand.
