Gingerbread house roof template
For a 6 by 7 inch house, each roof panel is 8 by 4 3/4 inches at a 45° roof with a 1/2-inch overhang. A lower 35° roof needs 4 1/8-inch panels; a steep 58° roof, 6 1/8 inches. Tap a pitch to see it.
Side walls are two dough thicknesses shorter than the depth, so they fit between the front and back.
Your six pieces
Roof panels for a 6 × 7 house
| Roof pitch | Roof panel (×2) | Gable peak | Dough |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35°, low | 8″ by 4 1/8″ | 6 1/8″ | 2 1/2 lb |
| 45°, classic | 8″ by 4 3/4″ | 7″ | 2 3/4 lb |
| 58°, steep | 8″ by 6 1/8″ | 8 3/4″ | 3 lb |
The panel's length is the house depth plus the overhang at both ends (7″ + 2 × 1/2″ = 8″). Its width is half the house width divided by the cosine of the pitch, plus the overhang: at 45°, 3″ ÷ 0.707 + 1/2″ = 4 3/4″. The gable walls change with the pitch too, so print the whole set together.
Questions
Why does the roof change the walls?
The front and back walls carry the gable, so a steeper roof makes them taller. The maker redraws both at once.
How much overhang should the roof have?
The maker starts at 1/2″. Set any overhang from 0 to 1 1/2″; it adds to both the panel's length and width.
Can the roof be one piece?
The template prints two panels that meet at the peak. A one-piece folded roof is not something it draws.
